10-Year-Old Girl Mauled by Five Dogs in Critical Condition

We see these headlines too many times. Children are attacked, mauled, and sometimes killed by dogs while they play. Dog attacks have always been disproportional, affecting children more than any other age group. Dog bites are so common for children; they beat out all playground injuries combined.

Dog attacks aren’t limited to the aggressive dog down the street. Many dog bites to children come directly from the household pet. We must have a healthy respect for canines. Domesticated or not, they are animals with instincts that we do not fully understand. The neighbor’s friendly yellow lab could snap at a child for picking up her toy. The family’s German Sheppard could think the new baby is invading their territory.

The dedicated team of attorneys at Price Petho & Associates P.L.L.C. knows all too well the devastating effects a dog attack can have on a family. If you or someone you know has been injured by a dog bite or attack, you need a personal injury lawyer in Charlotte, North Carolina. Don’t hesitate. Call us at Price Petho & Associates P.L.L.C. and protect yourself. Protect your family.

What Happened in This Case?

A horrific parents’ nightmare unfolded in a Maxton neighborhood. A 10-year-old girl was playing in her neighborhood when five dogs inexplicably attacked her. The girl was viciously mauled. She was taken to U.N.C. Medical Center in Chapel Hill and remains in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing. All five dogs have owners.

Are Shelters Honest about Aggressive Dogs?

According to DogsBite.org, a site that started tracking dog bite trends when the C.D.C. stopped, dogs have killed an estimated 521 people in America since 2005. Most dog bites come from familiar dogs, either a neighbor’s dog or a family pet.

How do you protect your family when adopting a dog?

A recent study has shown that some shelters will go to great lengths to mask aggression in dogs.  The study found that shelters use certain terms to camouflage aggression in their dogs.

  • Shelters are medicating dogs to mask aggression. “Transitional medication” is a term used for take-home meds.
  • Barrier reactivity, cage crazy, kennel aggression, kennel stress, or the need for the dog to decompress are terms used to blame a dog’s aggression on being in the shelter.
  • Separation anxiety is a term that masks severe aggression.

The study lists over 100 terms, categorized from high aggression, scam alert, and moderately high. I encourage anyone looking to adopt a shelter dog to become familiar with some of the terminology to make an informed decision.

Dogs can be fantastic family pets. They can protect our loved ones, our homes, and some would lay down their lives for our children. As a society, we need to take care not to scrutinize and classify canines into good or bad. Dogs have their own history and own personalities. If you have children in the house, make sure to adopt a dog that will fit your life.
