He is admitted to practice in all State Courts as well as both the United States Middle and Western District Courts.
A member of the firm since 1993, Rick currently limits his practice to cases involving medical negligence, workers compensation, and catastrophic personal injury.
Rick has successfully handled a number of cases involving medical negligence including the failure to diagnose Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in an adolescent (resulting in death), the failure to diagnose a pulmonary embolism in an elderly client (resulting in death), the failure to properly resuscitate an expectant mother following an overdose of anesthesia through her epidural (resulting in a persistent vegetative state), the failure to resuscitate a young man following an anesthetic overdose prior to hand surgery (resulting in death), and the failure to adequately diagnose and treat a pregnant mother in pre-term labor (resulting in significant brain injuries and disabilities to the child).
Rick has additionally concluded many workers compensation cases. A number of these cases have involved catastrophic injuries resulting in paraplegia and brain injury and have led to settlements in excess of a million dollars and agreements for the payment of attendant care (weekly checks to family members to care for the injured party).
Rick also represents clients who have sustained serious and catastrophic injuries as the result of motor vehicle accidents. Rick was lead counsel in the recovery of a $9 million settlement obtained in 1999 on behalf of a young woman who sustained permanent brain damage after her car collided with a commercial truck.
Rick is an active member of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and is a member of both the Professional Negligence and Workers Compensation Divisions. He is a long-term member of the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina and is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, a society limited to a select group of attorneys who have obtained million dollar settlements and/or verdicts for their clients.
Rick has been married to his wife, Lori, a native North Carolinian, for 14 years. Lori also works within the medical-legal field. They have one daughter, Emily. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys offshore fishing, snow skiing, scuba diving, and spending time on his farm in South Carolina.
